13-Year-Old Dog Just Won Westminster’s Top Honor

Thirteen-year-old Poykee the Keeshond made political history when he was crowned winner of the Westminster Dog of the Year competition in the shadow of the Houses of Parliament. The beloved companion of Sarah Edwards, Labour MP for Tamworth, charmed judges with his personality and demonstrated the vital role dogs play in households across the nation during the annual event organized by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust. Edwards had been carefully preparing Poykee for the competition, ensuring his individual personality would shine through while promoting responsible pet ownership throughout their constituency visits in Tamworth.

The competition drew MPs and their canine companions together to discuss crucial dog welfare issues including pet-friendly housing, responsible breeding, and the importance of training and socialization for happy, healthy dogs. Poykee triumphed over strong competition, with rescue dog Mabel taking second place and office Labrador Lucy earning third, while guide dog Jennie won the special Sir David Amess Public Vote. The event celebrated more than just cute pets, it highlighted the human-animal bond and provided a platform for MPs to engage with experts on animal welfare policy. This delightful political paw-ty proves that sometimes the most important voices in government are the ones that communicate through wagging tails and unconditional love.
