72-Year-Old Sets Marathon World Record on Crutches

Chris Terrill, 72, has officially set a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon on crutches, completing the 2024 Brighton Marathon in six hours, 11 minutes, and 11 seconds—just four months after hip replacement surgery.

A seasoned marathon runner, Chris had already registered for the race before breaking his hip in a cricket accident. Determined not to withdraw, he took on the challenge using crutches, unaware that he was on pace to break a world record. Weeks later, a friend informed him of his achievement—beating the previous record by over 13 minutes.

Despite the physical toll, Chris was thrilled by the experience, describing the atmosphere as an incredible motivator. His crutches now hold a place of honor in his office as a reminder of the feat. An honorary Royal Marine and ambassador for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, he runs annually in memory of his late friend, Commander Bob Hawkins.

Looking ahead, Chris plans to participate in the Brighton Half Marathon—this time, fully recovered and back on two legs.
