98-Year-Old Pianist Finds Friendship and Fame Through Neighborly Kindness

When Lydia and Andy Pender moved into their Honolulu apartment, they never expected the music coming through their walls would lead to a life-changing friendship. The couple introduced themselves to their neighbor, Derek Peart, a 98-year-old former British Navy pilot, and discovered his music was louder than usual due to hearing aids that needed adjusting. After helping him fix the issue, they learned he was a self-taught pianist with a fascinating story.

Derek began playing piano by ear as a tribute to his late wife, Mickey, who had gifted him the Yamaha piano he still plays today. What started as casual visits for tea blossomed into monthly gatherings filled with pizza, beer, dessert, and Derek’s mini piano concerts. Themes like Christmas carols and love songs brought joy to their evenings, with Derek even writing lyrics for Lydia to sing while he played.

Lydia began sharing Derek’s performances on TikTok to spread his joy and talent, and the videos quickly went viral, touching millions of hearts. People from around the world shared stories about their grandparents and praised Derek’s timeless music. Now a social media sensation, Derek loves hearing the positive comments and marvels at his newfound fame. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the connections that can form when kindness and music bring people together.
