How Cycling is Transforming London’s Air and Streets

Cycling is taking over the streets of London’s financial heart. New figures reveal that daily bike journeys in the City of London have surged by more than 50% in just two years—rising from 89,000 in 2022 to 139,000 in 2024. That makes bikes nearly twice as common as cars during daytime hours in the Square Mile, signaling a major shift toward cleaner, greener transport.

This boom in cycling is more than a lifestyle trend—it’s helping clean the air. Motor vehicle traffic has dropped by 5% over the same period, and air quality has markedly improved, with only two locations now exceeding nitrogen dioxide limits, down from 15 in 2019. City officials credit the growth to new cycling infrastructure and the soaring popularity of dockless hire bikes, which now make up one in six bikes on the road. With progress like this, the City of London is well on its way to becoming a model of urban sustainability.
