A Crowd of Golden Retrievers Gather to Honor a Fellow Boston Canine

More than 100 golden retrievers filled Boston Common with wagging tails and gentle paws in a touching tribute to Spencer, the official dog of the Boston Marathon. Alongside them, many also honored Spencer’s sister, Penny—both beloved pups passed away from cancer earlier this year.

The golden parade, organized by MA Golden Meetups, paused for a moment of silence before presenting Spencer’s owner with heartfelt thanks and a donation to canine cancer research. Spencer became a symbol of endurance and encouragement for marathon runners, holding “Boston Strong” flags along the course in rain or shine. Though Spencer and Penny are gone, their legacy lives on—inspired runners, softened hearts, and now, a campaign to place a statue along the marathon route in his honor.
