Strangers Change a Veterans Life In Viral TikTok Moment

Ed Bambas, an 88-year-old veteran working 40 hours per week as a cashier at a Michigan Meijer grocery store, broke into tears when Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer surprised him Friday with a check for more than $1.7 million. The extraordinary donation came after Weidenhofer learned about Bambas from a stranger’s comment on one of his videos and flew over 9,000 miles from Australia to meet him and share his story on TikTok. Bambas had been forced to return to work nearly a decade ago after his wife died following a long illness and his former employer eliminated his pension, leaving him without enough income to pay for his home or the medical bills they had accumulated. The emotional veteran told WXYZ that he wished his wife could have been there to witness the moment, calling it something that dreams are made of.

Weidenhofer’s initial TikTok video showing him approaching Bambas at work, hearing his story, and surprising him with a $400 tip has racked up more than 10 million views since it was posted. In the viral video, Bambas shared his dream to live somewhat of the life he was hoping for, prompting Weidenhofer to set up an online fundraiser that quickly accrued donations from strangers around the world. The influencer told WXYZ that no 88-year-old in America should have to work because they need to, and that the situation broke his heart enough to inspire him to give Bambas a chance to retire with comfort. The $1.7 million will help Bambas pay off debts and finally retire a second time, allowing him to fulfill the dream he expressed of living a little of the life he had hoped for after decades of service to his country and community.
