Stranger Things Finale Helps Dethrone Taylor Swift On Spotify

Joe Keery, who plays the beloved Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, just accomplished something most musicians only dream about: dethroning Taylor Swift on the Spotify charts. After the hit show’s series finale aired on new years eve, fans flooded social media with emotional TikToks and reels celebrating the end of the 10 year Netflix phenomenon, and many of them used Keery’s song “End of Beginning” as the soundtrack to their tributes. The track, which Keery released under his musical alias DJO as part of his 2022 album “Decide,” shot to the number one position on Spotify, ending Swift’s 78 consecutive day reign with her 2025 song “The Fate of Ophelia.” Steve Harrington became one of the most cherished characters throughout Stranger Things’ decade long run, evolving from a shallow high school jock into a loyal friend and fan favorite, so it feels fitting that his real life counterpart would ride that wave of love straight to the top of the charts.

What makes the moment even more special is that Swift herself was already a fan of the very song that took her spot, having complimented “End of Beginning” when she ran into Keery at Electric Lady recording studio in New York City years earlier. Keery recalled being completely shocked when Swift told him she loved his track, asking “What? You heard that song? How the hell did you hear that song?” The massive surge in streams proves that audiences are just as eager to hear Keery’s music as they were to watch him bring Steve Harrington to life on screen for the past decade. As fans process the emotional finale and celebrate the characters who became like family over 10 years, Keery’s achievement shows that sometimes the perfect song at the perfect moment can create pure magic.
