World’s Oldest Cat Celebrates 30th Birthday

Flossie, the world’s oldest living cat, celebrated her 30th birthday on December 29th, reaching an age equivalent to approximately 140 to 150 years in human terms and extending her Guinness World Record run. Born on December 29th, 1995, the British domestic shorthair tortoiseshell cat lived in a feral colony in Merseyside, England, before she was rescued as a kitten by a hospital worker and has survived two previous owners who both passed away. She lived with her first owner for 10 years and her second owner for another 14 years before ending up at UK based charity Cats Protection, where current owner Vicki Green adopted her during her more mature years. Green, who lives in Orpington outside of London and has always wanted to give older cats a comfortable later life, said she knew from the start that Flossie was special but never imagined she’d share her home with a world record holder.

Despite being deaf with poor vision, Flossie remains otherwise in good health and is affectionate and playful just like a kitten, waking early for breakfast before spending her day sleeping and playing. Green bought Flossie a small ladder to help her climb onto the sofa, but the spry senior refuses to use it and continues jumping everywhere like she’s decades younger. Cats Protection noted that Flossie maintains a consistent daily regimen including gentle play, regular meals, and prolonged periods of sleep, though Green credits her longevity mainly to luck and the love of her previous owners. While Flossie holds the title for oldest living cat, the record for oldest cat ever still belongs to Creme Puff from Austin, Texas, who lived an astonishing 38 years and three days from 1967 to 2005.
