81 Year Old Breaks World Record For Her Husband

At 81 years old Bonnie Sumner stood in her Colorado gym ready to hang from a pull up bar for over three minutes to smash a Guinness World Record. Bonnie who lost her husband Mark of 60 years in December 2023 discovered a remarkable talent for dead hangs when she returned to the gym in 2024 seeking escape from grief, and her trainer Eve Lawrence started training her. When Bonnie tried her first dead hang in July 2024 she managed an incredible 21 seconds while most gym clients in their 40s and 50s could only do four seconds. The five foot four 115 pound widow kept pushing despite arthritis, developing an obstinate streak refusing to let anyone tell her she could not do three more seconds. She always wore her wedding band in memory of Mark even though it made the challenge harder, and when she hit 2 minutes and 1 second in February 2025 her gym owner suggested she look up the world record which was just over two minutes.

There were so many things she could not control but this record was something she absolutely could. On the day of her official Guinness attempt in January 2026 Bonnie told the crowd she needed complete silence then jumped to the bar. At 2 minutes her body began shaking and at 2:22 she said ouch but kept hanging even though the record was already hers because Bonnie does not settle for just enough. Finally at 3 minutes and 3 seconds she let go having beaten the previous record by over a minute, calmly picked up her water bottle because she had library books to return, then quietly changed into Mark’s old jeans proving it is never too late to make yourself stronger.
