Artists And Creators Celebrate As OpenAI Shuts Down Controversial AI Video Platform Sora

OpenAI announced Tuesday it is shutting down Sora , its AI video-generation app that had become one of the most controversial platforms in the recent AI boom. “We’re saying goodbye to Sora,” the company posted on X. Since its launch as a standalone app in September 2025, Sora had been a flashpoint in the debate over AI’s threat to human creators. The platform allowed anyone to generate startlingly realistic videos of real people, fictional characters, and copyrighted material from a simple text prompt. This raised urgent concerns about deepfakes, nonconsensual imagery, and intellectual property theft. OpenAI was forced to restrict AI-generated content of public figures including Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mister Rogers, but only after an outcry from family estates and an actors’ union. Japanese content group CODA, whose members include Studio Ghibli, demanded OpenAI stop using their work to train Sora 2. Artists, advocates, and copyright experts had been raising the alarm from day one, and their voices were heard.

The shutdown also unravels a blockbuster $1 billion deal OpenAI had struck with Disney just three months ago, which would have licensed over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars for use in user-generated AI videos, a deal that had sparked its own fierce backlash from creators. Disney confirmed Tuesday the partnership is no longer proceeding. For the creative community, the closure is a meaningful signal: that public pressure, artist advocacy, and the collective rejection of tools built on stolen work can make a difference. The fight over AI and creative rights is far from over, but the fall of Sora is a moment worth celebrating.
