A Diploma Delayed But Not Denied: 99-Year-Old Celebrates Graduation 80 Years Later

Georgia McGarry, at 99 years old, experienced a heartwarming surprise when she received her high school diploma, 80 years after she had to leave school. Originally a member of Woodsfield High School’s class of 1944, McGarry was forced to quit school during World War II to support her family. The Switzerland of Ohio Local School District awarded her the diploma in a surprise ceremony that McGarry thought was a dinner outing. Superintendent Phil Ackerman shared the touching moment as McGarry, with a beaming smile, moved her tassel, marking the completion of her long-delayed education.
