A Game-Changing Undersea Tunnel is Transforming European Travel

A massive infrastructure project is reshaping travel between Denmark and Germany. The Fehmarnbelt tunnel, set to be the world’s longest immersed road and rail tunnel, is well underway, with construction teams assembling enormous prefabricated concrete sections for installation beneath the Baltic Sea. When completed in 2029, the tunnel will significantly cut travel times, reducing a five-hour train journey between Hamburg and Copenhagen to just two and a half hours.

Unlike traditional underground tunnels, the Fehmarnbelt is being built using 79 massive concrete sections, each weighing as much as 10 Eiffel Towers. These elements are carefully floated into position before being submerged and sealed in place. The project, costing over €7.4 billion, will connect Scandinavia more efficiently with the rest of Europe, promoting tourism and sustainable travel. With environmental measures in place, including the creation of new wetlands, the tunnel is designed to enhance both transportation and conservation efforts.
