A Jury Just Ruled That Ticketmaster Has Been Ripping Off Concert Fans For Years

Concert fans who have spent years fuming over sky-high ticket prices and fees they never agreed to just got a landmark vindication, as a federal jury in New York found that Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster illegally operated as a monopoly in the live events and ticketing industry. The verdict came after a six-week trial in Manhattan federal court featuring testimony from dozens of witnesses including top executives across the music and entertainment worlds, followed by four days of jury deliberation. More than 30 states and the District of Columbia brought the case, arguing that Live Nation had used its control over ticketing, concert booking, venues, and promotion to lock out competitors, limit options for artists, and drive up costs for ordinary fans across the country for years. The jury found that Ticketmaster overcharged concertgoers by $1.72 per ticket as a direct result of its anticompetitive behavior, with further damages still to be determined.

The ruling is considered one of the most significant antitrust verdicts in the history of the American entertainment industry and a genuine victory for the millions of music fans who have long complained that the entire system was built against them. A federal judge will now hold a separate proceeding to determine what the remedy will look like, with states asking for structural changes that could include forcing the company to break apart and sell Ticketmaster entirely. Attorneys general from both red and blue states praised the verdict as proof that determined coalitions can take on even the largest corporations in the country and win even when federal enforcement falls short. One former antitrust official who worked the case said the verdict sends a message that cannot be misread: even the most powerful companies in the world are not above the law, and the fans were right all along.
