A Kitty’s 6 Month Journey Finally Led Him Home

When Zita Baumeister spotted a friendly cat outside her apartment building in Bryanston, South Africa, something told her this beautiful boy with striking looks belonged to someone who was missing him. The American Shorthair wasn’t scared at all and walked right up to her like he had been waiting for someone to finally notice him, and local chat groups had been reporting sightings of him living in the storm drains along a nearby road for several months. Zita scooped him up and took him straight to the vet to scan for a microchip, but when none was found she knew she had to try a different approach to find his family. She arranged temporary foster care through a local cat rescue and posted his photo on Facebook and neighborhood groups, hoping someone would recognize this handsome face.

The very next day her phone lit up with the answer she was hoping for: his name was Zuki and his family had been desperately searching for him since he disappeared back in June from a town called Sunninghill. His family had even hired a professional pet search team that tracked his scent to a river but couldn’t follow the trail any further, which made perfect sense because that same river runs right behind the area where Zuki was eventually found months later. After six long months of living underground in the drainage system and surviving on whatever food he could find, Zuki was finally reunited with his overjoyed family. The happy ending came with an important lesson: Zuki has now been microchipped so if he ever decides to go on another adventure, his family can bring him home much faster next time.
