A New Start with A Sense of Home

Julisa Merwin, a former foster teen who faced homelessness and challenges early in life, found invaluable support from the nonprofit organization A Sense of Home, which helped furnish her new apartment in February 2019. Living with her son, Julisa received not just furniture but also the chance to build a stable and welcoming home environment. Beyond the material support, the organization encouraged her to become a Pay-It-Forward alumni member, involving her in Home Creations projects where she volunteers alongside her son, Ezekiel. Julisa’s journey through adversity has been transformative; she is on track to graduate from Riverside City College this December and will pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Cal State Fullerton starting January 2025. Her story is a testament to the power of community support in changing lives, as she credits A Sense of Home with giving her much more than furniture—it gave her a foundation for a new life and the ability to give back to others facing similar challenges. Her involvement with the organization not only enhanced her living situation but also set her on a path to achieving her educational and career goals, exemplifying the impact of holistic support in overcoming adversity.
