A Pill That Extends Dogs’ Lives Is Close To FDA Approval

Every dog owner knows the deal they make when they bring a puppy home. The years go by too fast, and eventually the dog that raced through the yard starts to slow down and grey at the muzzle. A San Francisco biotech company called Loyal has spent six years trying to change that timeline, and they are now closer than any company has ever been to an FDA-approved lifespan extension drug. The product is called LOY-002, a daily beef-flavored prescription pill for senior dogs aged 10 and older. It targets a hormone called IGF-1, which accelerates cellular aging and metabolic decline as dogs get older, and aims to reverse that decline without requiring any change in diet. The FDA has now accepted two of the three major technical sections of Loyal’s conditional approval application, with only manufacturing requirements left. If the final section clears, the drug could be on the market this year.

To support that approval, Loyal also completed enrollment for the largest clinical trial in the history of veterinary medicine. The STAY study enrolled 1,300 dogs across 70 clinics around the country, half receiving LOY-002 and half receiving an identical beef-flavored placebo. If approved, it would become the first drug in any species ever cleared specifically for lifespan extension. Loyal’s founder said the FDA’s safety acceptance brings them very close to achieving a goal she has held since founding the company: getting the first lifespan extension drug approved anywhere in the world. Dogs are considered strong models for aging research because they share a similar number of genes with humans and develop many of the same diseases. The researchers behind LOY-002 believe the science may eventually point toward ways to extend healthy life in people as well, making this not just a milestone for dog owners but a meaningful step in aging research broadly.
