A Very Green Graduation: Kermit the Frog to Deliver Commencement Speech

The University of Maryland is hopping into graduation season with a special guest who’s green, wise, and beloved by millions—Kermit the Frog. The iconic Muppet will deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2025 on May 21.

Kermit, described by the university as an environmental advocate and “friend to all creatures,” was created by UMD alumnus Jim Henson while he was a student there. A statue honoring both Henson and Kermit already stands proudly on campus.

In a statement, Kermit expressed his joy at the invitation, saying, “Nothing could make these feet happier than to speak at the University of Maryland.” The frog-turned-cultural-icon previously gave a commencement speech in 1996, charming graduates with equal parts silliness and sincerity.

Kermit’s appearance will continue a legacy of uplifting messages on campus while honoring UMD’s creative roots. Theater major Adam Hawley called the choice “remarkable,” saying Kermit’s humanity shines through his humor and heart.

Whether it’s through song, swamp wisdom, or simply being himself, Kermit is expected to bring joy, laughter, and a few tears to this year’s ceremony.
