American Cigarette Smoking Just Hit A Record Low

For the first time in recorded history, fewer than 10 percent of American adults smoke cigarettes. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 9.9 percent of adults smoked in 2024, crossing a threshold that public health researchers describe as genuinely significant. In their field, events affecting fewer than 10 percent of a population are considered rare, meaning cigarette smoking in America has now become statistically uncommon for the first time since the habit became widespread in the 20th century. The milestone represents the end result of six decades of sustained effort: the landmark Surgeon General’s report in 1964 established the deadly link between smoking and cancer, and in the years since, tobacco taxes, advertising restrictions, indoor smoking bans, public education campaigns and cessation programs have collectively driven the smoking rate down by more than three quarters from a peak of 42 percent.

Public health experts describe the achievement as a monumental win representing millions of lives that were not shortened by smoking-related disease. The path here was not inevitable: it required decades of policy battles, cultural shifts and persistent advocacy by researchers, doctors and public health workers. The progress also comes with a candid acknowledgment that a new challenge has emerged alongside it. E-cigarette use among American adults has risen to 7 percent in 2024, nearly double the 3.7 percent reported in 2020, and the majority of young adults who currently vape have never smoked traditional cigarettes, suggesting a new generation has developed a nicotine habit through a different delivery system. Researchers note that the long-term health effects of vaping are still unknown. Still, the broader story of the fall of cigarette smoking in America stands as one of the great public health achievements of modern times, proof that sustained effort over generations can fundamentally change a nation’s behavior.
