An Alaska Animal Shelter Lets You Borrow A Dog For 48 Hours And It Is Leading To More Adoptions

The Anchorage Animal Care and Control shelter in Alaska launched a program in spring 2025 called Tails on Trails that has since become one of the most talked-about shelter initiatives in the country, pairing volunteers with a shelter dog for 48 hours and sending them out to explore the trails and wilderness around Anchorage together. The signup takes just 15 to 20 minutes, requires no prior experience, and is open not only to local residents but to visitors passing through, meaning tourists with a free afternoon can borrow a dog and give it something it rarely gets in a kennel: two full days of fresh air, trails, and human company. The results have been striking in every direction. Volunteer numbers have skyrocketed, adoption rates have accelerated, and shelter staff say dogs that have spent time on the trails come back noticeably calmer and more at ease than those cooped up all day.

The shelter’s community outreach manager said the biggest relief on the staff’s end is seeing dogs in a state closer to how they would be if living in a home rather than a cage, and that the program is helping animals get out the door far faster than before. Participants describe the experience as something that benefits both parties equally, with volunteers getting companionship and outdoor motivation and the dogs getting exactly what they need most. The program has also become a draw for visitors who want to experience the Alaskan outdoors alongside a local canine guide. The shelter is actively recruiting more volunteers and says the only real complaint reported so far is that some participants return the dog significantly more attached than they planned to be, which the shelter notes is generally the whole idea.
