Anchorage Pets Are Prepped in Style for Volcanic Eruption

As a volcano near Anchorage shows signs of erupting, local residents are getting ready—but not just for themselves. Pet owners are stocking up on gear to protect their four-legged friends, too. From tiny respirators to heart-shaped goggles, dogs like Iroh the corgi are now armed with personal (and pet) protective equipment.

While ashfall from Mount Spurr could irritate lungs and eyes, the city has reminded residents not to forget about their pets. That warning has sparked a run on dog gear, including booties, masks, and stylish eyewear like “Doggles” and Rex Specs. Some stores have sold hundreds of pairs in just weeks.

Experts say ash contains sharp particles that can harm pets’ paws and eyes. And while getting a dog to wear a mask isn’t easy, owners are trying everything from treats to training to help their pups adjust. For now, Anchorage’s pets are prepping in style—and keeping their tails wagging.
