Baby Hippo’s Parental Pool Rebellion

When zookeepers at Tanganyika Wildlife Park try to get 5-week-old Mars the pygmy hippo out of his pool, the stubborn little guy escapes their grasp and plunges right back into the water for more playtime. The adorable rebellion continues until his mother Posie steps in with nothing more than a silent stare, instantly causing Mars to hop out and follow her without another peep of protest. The viral TikTok has racked up over 4.6 million likes as viewers around the world recognize the universal power of “the mom stare” that transcends species boundaries.

Dr. Samantha Russak, the zoo’s Curator of Research and Welfare, explains that this daily struggle happens because Mars is still nursing and isn’t motivated by food rewards like the adult hippos who eagerly head inside for dinner. At 40 pounds and covered in a mucus-like “blood sweat” secretion that makes him slippery like “a greasy avocado,” Mars is nearly impossible for zookeepers to physically carry inside. Social media users can’t stop comparing Posie’s authoritative glance to human mothers everywhere, with comments ranging from “She must have used his full three names” to “The mom stare is universal in every species.” The heartwarming video proves that whether you’re dealing with a human toddler or a baby hippo, maternal authority speaks a language that every child understands perfectly.
