Berlin’s Beloved Gorilla Turns 68, And She’s Still the Queen of the Zoo

At 68 years old, Fatou the gorilla is celebrating another milestone as the oldest living gorilla in captivity. To mark the occasion, the Berlin Zoo treated her to a soft and colorful birthday basket filled with her favorite fruits and vegetables. Born in 1957 and arriving at the zoo in 1959, Fatou has witnessed decades of history and generations of zoo visitors. While she now enjoys a quieter life in her own enclosure, away from the younger, more energetic gorillas, she remains a cherished figure at the zoo.

Because she no longer has teeth, her keepers carefully prepare food that’s easy to chew, ensuring her comfort and health. “She gets the best possible care,” said the zoo’s lead veterinarian. Gorillas typically live up to 40 years in the wild, but Fatou’s long life is a testament to the dedicated care she receives. With a calm space all her own and a loyal fanbase, she continues to age gracefully—and in style.
