Born Without Brain And Celebrating A Milestone Birthday

Alex Simpson of Omaha, Nebraska, just celebrated her 20th birthday, defying every medical prediction made when she was born with hydranencephaly, a devastating condition that left her with almost no brain. Doctors told her parents Shawn and Lorena that their newborn daughter would likely not survive past age four, as the rare disorder affects only one in 5,000 to 10,000 pregnancies and is usually fatal within the first year. Alex was born missing her cerebral hemispheres, with only a tiny piece of her cerebellum about half the size of a pinky finger remaining in the back of her brain.

Although Alex cannot see or hear, her family believes she can sense their presence and even pick up on their emotions. Her younger brother describes how Alex seems to know when someone around her is stressed, even in complete silence. The family has learned to communicate with Alex through touch and presence, creating their own special language that transcends typical senses. Every smile, every squeeze of the hand, and every shift in her breathing tells them that their beloved daughter and sister is fully present with them.

When asked how their daughter has survived so much longer than expected, both parents give the same answer: love and faith. Alex’s story continues to inspire families facing similar diagnoses, proving that miracles can happen when determination meets unwavering devotion.
