Brave Women Take Down Chicago Purse Thief

Lavonne Schaafsma took a day trip from Michigan to downtown Chicago expecting to enjoy Millennium Park and soak in the sights, but panic hit hard when she returned to her car and realized her purse packed with ID, credit cards, medications, and several hundred dollars was gone. After searching for over an hour with anxiety building from her legs to her gut to her chest, something nudged her toward a gift shop in Millennium Park where she asked the cashier if anyone had turned in a black purse. The cashier’s eyes widened because someone had indeed turned it in, and all of Lavonne’s tears, sobs, and anxiety came flooding out in relief.

Then came the incredible story that restores faith in everyday heroes: two women had walked into the shop thirty minutes earlier visibly shaken, explaining they’d spotted the bag sitting on a bench but also saw a man going through it. Something didn’t sit right with them, so they boldly approached the man and asked if the purse was his, and when he mumbled that his wife had lost it, they didn’t buy his story for a second. The courageous women did something remarkable by pretending the purse was theirs and wrestling it away from the thief before rushing into the gift shop to wait for the owner. They left the purse with a security guard before heading out, and just five minutes later Lavonne walked through the door to reclaim her belongings and avoid hours of stress plus a mountain of logistical headaches. Lavonne never got to thank the two women who rescued her from massive anxiety by intervening on behalf of a stranger who wasn’t even present, proving that courage and quick thinking can change someone’s entire day.
