Bucharest Welcomes Cat Houses for Stray Felines

Bucharest’s District 6 has introduced its first houses for stray cats, thanks to a citizen-driven participatory budgeting project. Four large, 100kg shelters were recently installed, providing a safe haven for stray cats, especially during winter.

This initiative is set to grow with over 30 cat houses planned for installation across the district. The project was proposed by residents and supported by homeowners associations, reflecting a community-driven effort to care for stray animals.

Mayor Ciprian Ciucu, who himself has adopted two street cats, emphasized the importance of providing for these “souls that deserve to be saved.” Crafted by local artisans, the cat houses offer a secure alternative to basements and the streets, showcasing Bucharest’s commitment to animal welfare.
