Cambridge Children’s Hospital to Pioneer Integrated Mental and Physical Health Care

A groundbreaking children’s hospital in Cambridge will be the first in Europe to fully integrate care for both physical and mental health conditions, addressing stigma and improving diagnoses. With an expected completion in 2029, the hospital will unite two NHS trusts and a University of Cambridge research institute to provide holistic care for young patients.

The new facility is designed to reduce unnecessary disruptions by treating children with coexisting conditions in one location. This innovative model emphasizes collaboration between mental health and physical health teams, aiming to treat children as a whole rather than separating care by specialty.

Amid rising rates of mental health issues among children, this approach also focuses on creating a less medicalized environment with outdoor spaces and family-centered care. Staff believe this model will reduce hospital stays and associated costs, setting a new standard for pediatric healthcare.

The project has secured government funding and additional support from philanthropy, local health bodies, and partner hospitals. Leaders hope the hospital will inspire a cultural shift in healthcare and serve as a blueprint for integrated care worldwide.
