Churches Serve Up Pickleball to Build Community and Stay Afloat

In London, Ontario, churches are embracing a new kind of gathering—on the pickleball court. With gym spaces sitting empty during the week, several churches, including Oakridge Presbyterian and Colborne Street United, have opened their doors to local pickleball enthusiasts. The result? A win-win: churches generate much-needed revenue, while players gain affordable, accessible court time. Volunteer Nancy Martin, who runs Oakridge Presbyterian’s program, saw the potential back in 2020, recognizing that the sport provides retirees with a social, active outlet.

Now, their six daily time slots are often fully booked. At Colborne Street United, coordinator Laverne Kirkness says these programs are helping churches evolve, offering community activities beyond traditional services. Many players aren’t church members, but familiarizing themselves with the space may lead them to seek spiritual support when needed. By blending faith and recreation, these churches are proving that community connection comes in many forms—even with a paddle in hand.
