Company Reunites Old Friends After 68 Years

Pensioners Brenda Parry and Barbara Chorley, both 79, were astonished to discover each other among a group of strangers on a June bus day trip to Windermere organized by Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire for Loneliness Awareness Week when they realized they hadn’t seen each other since attending primary school together in Kendal 68 years ago. Barbara noticed a smiling lady whose face she recognized but couldn’t quite place until the woman walked over and introduced herself as Brenda, sparking memories of their days together at the old Castle Street School where they played games and walked through winter snow to get to classes. Brenda said she immediately recognized Barbara despite the decades that had passed, and the two spent the entire day catching up and reminiscing about their childhood before promising to keep in touch and arrange future outings together. The heartwarming reunion happened during a Grand Day Out that treated about 20 pensioners to an open top bus trip and afternoon tea at the World of Beatrix Potter as part of a collaboration between Stagecoach and Age UK South Cumbria.

The story of their chance encounter captured hearts across the country and led to Stagecoach asking the pair to star in their Christmas advertising campaign, which brought them back to Windermere and Ambleside to be filmed enjoying mince pies at local cafe Homeground Coffee and Kitchen. Barbara and Brenda were thrilled to participate in the festive advert and appeared on BBC Radio Cumbria to share their story, with both women expressing gratitude for the bus trip that brought them back together after losing touch when they went to separate high schools nearly seven decades earlier. Tom Waterhouse, Managing Director of Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, called their reunion the feelgood story of 2025 and said he couldn’t think of anyone better to star in their Christmas campaign celebrating a time of year when friends and families come together. The Grand Days Out events have become really important and popular experiences that combat loneliness while creating unexpected moments of joy like the one that reconnected these two childhood friends who never imagined they’d find each other again.
