Doctor Opens Exotic Bird Hospital After No One Could Help

Dr Rani Maria Thomas grew up in a lively home filled with 23 cats, 15 dogs, pigeons, macaws and conures who weren’t just pets but her beloved siblings and entire world. When her macaw fell critically ill, the devastating reality hit hard as no veterinarian in India could guide her through treating exotic birds, and despite trying everything, her cherished companion didn’t survive. That moment of helplessness transformed into a powerful mission to provide care for animals often completely overlooked in Indian veterinary practice, even though she had secured an MBBS rank to become a human doctor.

Her father recognized the severe shortage of vets for exotic creatures in India and encouraged her to pursue her true passion, leading her to become the only student borrowing books on avian medicine from the library day and night. She traveled to train at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital where she witnessed world class care for raptors and dreamed of bringing those same standards back home. Upon returning to India, she founded Sara’s Birds and Exotic Animal Hospital, a 2,000 square foot facility equipped with an ICU, endoscopy, X-ray technology, and professional grooming services. Today she treats macaws, cockatoos, hornbills, flamingoes, vultures and other exotic species from across India, turning away international opportunities to remain rooted in her mission. Dr Rani is revolutionizing exotic animal and bird care in India, training more vets to specialize in this overlooked field and proving that unconditional love for every creature can change an entire profession.
