Drunk Raccoon Update: Over $180k Raised!

When surveillance footage captured a raccoon on a booze-fueled rampage through an ABC liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, smashing dozens of bottles and raiding shelves before passing out face down on the bathroom floor, nobody could have predicted the viral sensation and fundraising phenomenon that would follow. Animal control officers from Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter arrived to find the intoxicated masked bandit splooted next to a toilet after his Black Friday binge, and the photo they shared quickly spread across social media within 39 minutes, launching the hungover critter into international internet stardom. Rather than let the viral moment fade away, the shelter partnered with Richmond-based custom apparel maker Bonfire to create limited-edition merchandise featuring the phrase “Trashed Panda” with an illustration of a passed-out raccoon next to a spilled bottle of booze, turning laughs into lasting impact for animals in need. Within the first few hours of launch, Bonfire had sold over 1,000 shirts, and the campaign quickly surpassed $100,000 before ultimately raising over $180,000, with some reports indicating the total climbed above $250,000 and continues growing.

All proceeds from the merchandise collection including t-shirts, hoodies, long-sleeve shirts, mugs, tumblers, and stickers go directly to supporting the county-run shelter, funding training, equipment, shelter needs, and care for homeless animals who are far less chaotic than their famous fundraising mascot. The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority joined the fun by releasing “Raccoon’s Recommendations” featuring three cocktail recipes inspired by the mischievous raccoon including Rye Rascal Sour, Trash Panda Old Fashioned, and Midnight Masked Gin Fizz, cementing the drunk raccoon’s place in Virginia viral history alongside other local legends. After a few hours of sleep and showing zero signs of injury other than probably a hangover and poor life choices, the raccoon was safely released back to the wild, hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer but inadvertently proving that sometimes even mischievous wildlife can make a serious difference. The shelter acknowledged being absolutely blown away by the community’s response, noting that while the raccoon’s story brought joy and laughter, their officers respond to hundreds of calls each year involving animals who need real help and support.
