Eight New Wolf Pups Bring Hope to Karnataka’s First Wolf Sanctuary

A heartwarming milestone for wildlife conservation unfolded at the Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary in Karnataka, where an Indian grey wolf gave birth to eight healthy pups. Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre credited the Karnataka Forest Department’s enhanced safety measures for creating a thriving habitat for these endangered wolves. Typically, only half of wolf pups survive in the wild, but officials are working diligently to ensure the safety of the entire litter.

The 332-hectare sanctuary, home to diverse wildlife including leopards, blackbucks, and peacocks, was recently declared Karnataka’s first Wolf Wildlife Sanctuary. With a growing wolf population of 35-40, conservation efforts continue to strengthen protections for the species. Plans are also underway to develop the sanctuary as a tourist destination, with a feasibility study exploring a safari experience. This marks an exciting step in preserving India’s rich biodiversity while fostering eco-tourism opportunities.
