Eminem Just Celebrated 18 Years Sober

On April 20, Eminem quietly did what he has done every year for nearly two decades as he shared a simple photo on Instagram of his sobriety coin, this time engraved with the Roman numerals XVIII, and let the milestone speak for itself. The 53-year-old Detroit legend, born Marshall Mathers III, has now been clean and sober for 18 years, marking one of the most powerful and inspiring stories of recovery in music history. His caption was minimal, simply “XVIII”, but the response was anything but. Fans flooded the post with messages of love and congratulations, his half-brother Nathan Mathers posted “proud of you big bro,” and Roots drummer Questlove added a simple “Awesome.” Comedian and podcaster Theo Von, himself open about his own recovery, left “Amen.” The coin carries the inscription “to thine own self be true,” with “unity, service and recovery” circling a golden triangle inside — the quiet language of a community that understands exactly what 18 years means.

Eminem’s journey to sobriety began after a near-fatal overdose in 2007, when he was consuming as many as 20 prescription pills a day at the height of his addiction to Vicodin, Ambien, and Valium. After entering recovery on April 20, 2008, he channeled that experience into his music and eventually came to see sobriety not as something to be ashamed of but as something to be proud of. “I started treating sobriety like a superpower,” he said in a 2025 documentary. Eighteen years on, one of the most successful recording artists of all time with 15 Grammys, multiple diamond-certified albums, and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductionm and is still showing up, still counting, and still inspiring millions.
