Endangered Pygmy Hippo Born at Edinburgh Zoo

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo has joyously announced the birth of a baby female pygmy hippo named Haggis, born on October 30. This tiny new addition is already capturing hearts with her burgeoning personality, as zookeepers note her active engagement with her surroundings. Haggis’ birth is part of a crucial breeding program aimed at conserving this endangered species, which currently numbers only around 2,000 in the wild. The zoo celebrated her arrival by sharing a charming video across social media, showing little Haggis energetically exploring and sniffing around her enclosure. Her birth closely follows that of Moo Deng, another pygmy hippo born in Thailand earlier in July, highlighting a global effort to boost the populations of these rare creatures. With each birth, these zoos are not only providing a safe haven for these vulnerable animals but also raising awareness about the conservation challenges facing pygmy hippos. The public’s fascination with these adorable calves helps fuel support for wildlife conservation projects essential for the species’ survival.
