Former Landlord Lawyer Now Defends Renters in Need

Once known for representing powerful landlords in court, attorney Andrew Rabinowitz has found a new calling—fighting on behalf of tenants facing eviction. After years working for high-profile property owners, including the Kushner family, Rabinowitz made a dramatic career shift and now leads a tenant advocacy program at Rising for Justice in Washington, D.C. The change was sparked by growing discomfort with the imbalance he saw in housing court, where tenants rarely had legal support.

Today, he helps low-income renters navigate complex legal systems, offering guidance, protection, and dignity in the face of housing insecurity. His deep knowledge of landlord strategies now helps renters gain a fair chance in court. Though the pay is lower, Rabinowitz says the work is deeply fulfilling—and for the first time in years, he sleeps well. Colleagues and students alike say his experience on both sides of the courtroom is making a real difference.

His journey is a powerful reminder that change is always possible—and that impact often begins with empathy.
