From Patient to Healer: Cancer Survivor Becomes a Beacon of Hope at Riley Hospital

Dalton Cummins, a 24-year-old two-time cancer survivor, has transformed his harrowing health battles into a source of inspiration by becoming an oncology nurse at Riley Hospital for Children—the very place where he once fought for his life. Initially diagnosed with lymphoma at 19 during what appeared to be a bout of COVID-19, Cummins faced down cancer not once, but twice, overcoming a second diagnosis shortly after his first recovery. Now, he walks the halls of the hospital not as a patient, but as a caregiver, offering empathy and encouragement to children undergoing cancer treatments, much like he did. His unique perspective as a former patient allows him to connect deeply with his young charges, helping them face their treatments with courage and a sense of hope.
