From Stranded Calf To Mighty Bull, One Animal’s Incredible Journey

A tiny calf just a few days old was found alone and struggling in a mine dam in Welkom, South Africa, with no mother or herd in sight and a future that looked impossibly bleak. The newborn was too small to graze and far too young to fend for himself when a compassionate stranger spotted his desperate situation and gently lifted the helpless baby into their vehicle. They rushed him straight to the Virginia SPCA, where the first few days were touch and go as the dehydrated and confused calf, named Valentino, fought for his life.

Thanks to the dedicated care of the VSPCA team and especially Samuel, a staff member who has been with the organization for over 15 years, Valentino slowly began to heal, trust, and shine. Today this calf who almost didn’t make it has transformed into a bright eyed, playful, affectionate young bull with a huge personality that proves farm animals have deep feelings and emotions. The VSPCA team says Valentino’s journey from desperate struggle to thriving bull highlights how compassion can make a way and save a life.
