Government Stands by Cat Owners, Rules Out Restrictions on Pets

The Scottish government has reassured pet owners that it has no plans to ban or restrict cat ownership, despite concerns sparked by a recent wildlife report. First Minister John Swinney addressed the issue, emphasizing that Scotland remains a nation of cat lovers and that no restrictions will be imposed.

The clarification follows a report from the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission, which highlighted the impact domestic cats have on native species. The study found that pet cats kill around 700 million birds and small animals in the U.K. each year and suggested containment measures, such as keeping cats indoors or on leashes, in areas with vulnerable wildlife. While some media outlets framed the recommendations as a potential ban, Swinney firmly rejected the idea, stating, “The government’s not going to be banning cats or restricting cats.” Animal welfare groups, including Cats Protection, welcomed the reassurance and advocated for a balanced approach, encouraging responsible pet ownership while acknowledging the important role cats play in many Scottish households.
