Grocery Store Saves 100,000 Daily Meals From Being Cut

When federal funding for critical food programs came to a halt during a government shutdown, Texas grocery chain H-E-B stepped in with a stunning $6 million commitment to ensure vulnerable Texans wouldn’t go hungry. The company announced it would donate $5 million to support food banks across the Feeding Texas network and an additional $1 million specifically for Meals on Wheels Texas, which delivers more than 100,000 meals every single day to homebound seniors and disabled individuals. The timing of this gift was critical as Meals on Wheels had just announced devastating service reductions that would have left hundreds of the most vulnerable people without regular access to food, with 13.6 percent of Texas seniors already at risk of hunger.

H-E-B Senior Vice President Winell Herron emphasized the company’s passion for taking care of Texans and their longstanding partnership with organizations working year round to support those in need. The $1 million gift to Meals on Wheels will help ensure that Texas seniors can continue living independently without worrying where their next meal will come from during these challenging times. Meals on Wheels Texas board president Olivia Burdick expressed deep gratitude for H-E-B’s commitment to caring for the community’s most vulnerable neighbors when they needed it most. The grocery chain’s generosity is part of a growing wave of corporate support, with Bill Miller BBQ also contributing $192,000 to save Meals on Wheels services for San Antonio seniors, proving that businesses can make powerful differences when government funding falls short.
