Hamster Havoc Delays Flight in Portugal

A TAP Air Portugal plane faced an unexpected grounding at Ponta Delgada Airport on Sao Miguel Island after an unusual incident involving more than 130 hamsters. These furry escapees managed to get out of their cages, causing a four-day delay as crew members and airport staff scrambled to ensure all were safely recaptured. The incident began when the aircraft’s cargo hold, containing the hamsters, was compromised, allowing the small animals to roam freely throughout the plane. Extensive efforts were required to locate and secure each hamster, during which the plane was thoroughly inspected for any damage caused by the tiny stowaways. This unique situation not only highlighted the challenges of transporting animals but also the effective response of the airport’s team to manage unexpected issues. The plane was eventually cleared for operation, with all hamsters accounted for and no significant damage to the aircraft.
