How One Racehorse Brought Hope to a Family in Crisis

When five-year-old Betsy began cancer treatment, her family found hope in an unexpected place—a racehorse trained by her father. Just six weeks into treatment, Kitty’s Light won the Scottish Grand National, offering a moment of pure joy during an otherwise challenging time. Betsy had been diagnosed with leukemia earlier that year and started chemotherapy almost immediately.

While the early days were difficult, Charlotte, Betsy’s mother, said the race reminded them that happiness still had a place in their lives. Now in the maintenance phase of treatment, Betsy is back at school, playing with her sister, and slowly regaining her strength. Charlotte has returned to work with a renewed perspective, focused on making the most of each day. The family credits their resilience to small joys, strong community support, and their daughter’s courage. Even in the midst of uncertainty, a single race helped them believe in brighter days ahead.
