How Skateboarding Became the Biggest Youth Movement

Skateboarding is exploding across South Africa, transforming parks and community spaces from Soweto to Edenvale into vibrant hubs where young people are learning new skills, building confidence, and discovering a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the ramps. The 2025 South African Skateboarding Championships at Shapa Park in Soweto brought together riders from all around South Africa, showcasing just how far the sport has come while emphasizing that community matters as much as competition. Newly revamped parks are hosting competitions, workshops, and creative events that encourage experimentation and self expression, serving as meeting points where skaters connect, share tips, and learn from each other.

The movement is proving that local talent can reach international stages, with skaters like Brad Balie and Boipelo Awuah recently representing the country at a Russian Grand Skate Tour and inspiring the next generation back home. Skateboarding is giving young people more than just a way to pass the time. With more parks opening, competitions growing, and community support strengthening, skaters across the country are finding opportunities to develop both on and off their boards, creating a thriving movement that’s fostering creativity, friendship, and pride in communities that need it most.
