Italy’s Oldest Barista Has NO Plans To Stop Serving Coffee

Anna Possi has been brewing espressos and serving coffees for more than 80 years, and at 101 years old she still works from 7 in the morning until 7 in the evening with absolutely no intention of retiring anytime soon. She first started this kind of work at the end of World War II when she went to work in her uncle’s restaurants, then in 1958 opened Bar Centrale with her husband in the small town of Nebiuno on the shores of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Since her husband died in 1974, she’s been running the place on her own, transforming it into what she describes as more like a family than a bar, a meeting place where people come to ask favors and share their lives.

Customers who are now grandparents bring their own grandchildren in and reminisce with Anna about the days when there was a dance floor outside, a jukebox, and pinball machines, memories that span generations of the community she’s served. She’s always available for everyone, helping people get identity cards from the town hall through her daughter who works there, getting medical referrals from doctors, and serving as the heart of this small Italian community. Anna is among the growing number of Italian centenarians, the vast majority of them women, and her dedication to her work and community proves that purpose and connection might just be the secret to a long, fulfilling life. As she celebrated her 101st birthday, this remarkable woman showed no signs of slowing down, standing as living proof that retirement is just a state of mind and that some people are simply born to serve others with love, espresso, and endless availability.
