Man Becomes The World’s Oldest Person To Do THIS

Mark Herbst, a 69-year-old man from Bracebridge, Ontario, has just completed an extraordinary 11-month journey that saw him bike 30,000 kilometres through 25 countries around the world. The epic adventure was undertaken in memory of his late wife Jackie, who died in December 2021 at age 55 from squamous cell cancer, and raised more than $50,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Herbst’s friend and supporter Barrie Shepley, an Olympic coach who also lost his wife to cancer, described the accomplishment as beyond words after watching his friend tackle language barriers, extreme weather, and countless challenges completely solo.

During his journey, Herbst experienced the kindness of strangers in remarkable ways, including one instance when he got a flat tire with no bike shop for 2,000 kilometres and a man drove 1,100 kilometres to bring him a new tire. He spread Jackie’s ashes across the world, placing pieces of her in places they had always dreamed of visiting together, while enduring up to 11 hours of daily pedaling through scorching heat and relentless winds. The journey took him through countries like Turkey, Albania, Slovenia and Georgia, where he was consistently amazed by how friendly people were despite his initial uncertainty about what to expect. Herbst returned home briefly in July for just three days to celebrate an anniversary with his triathlon group before pushing himself to complete the trip. Now back in Toronto after arriving at Pearson International Airport, he’s applying for a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to ever circumnavigate the globe by bicycle, having beaten a 66-year-old New Zealander who finished just months before him.
