Massachusetts’ First Wildlife Bridge Aims to Save Lives

Massachusetts is set to build its first wildlife bridge over the Mass. Pike in Becket, with $1.7 million in funding from MassDOT. The bridge will allow animals to safely cross over the highway, reducing the high number of collisions between vehicles and wildlife in the area. Last year alone, nearly 30 deer-related crashes were reported in Becket, and over 3,700 statewide.

Modeled after successful wildlife crossings in the western U.S., Canada, and Europe, the bridge will include fencing to guide animals like deer, elk, and bears toward the overpass. Local residents, familiar with the dangers of unexpected animal encounters, are hopeful this project will enhance road safety and protect wildlife. By preventing collisions and preserving habitats, the bridge offers a sustainable solution for coexistence between humans and nature.
