Meet The New High Tech Ambulances

London Ambulance Service is rolling out 60 upgraded lightweight Ford ambulances designed with direct feedback from frontline crews as part of strengthening their fleet of 460 vehicles to care for Londoners during the challenging winter months ahead. The new high tech ambulances feature specialized equipment including automatic trolley beds and powered chairs that make moving and lifting patients significantly easier for paramedics while reducing the musculoskeletal injuries that have plagued emergency medical workers for decades. Chief Paramedic Pauline Cranmer explained that their crews need a robust modern fleet adapted to care for the needs of nine million people living in the capital, which is why they’re replacing older vehicles with cleaner and more reliable alternatives that have lower emissions and are digitally enabled to harness the latest technology. The vehicles were specifically designed to treat patients in London with features that improve comfort during transport and help clinicians provide better care during emergency situations ranging from falls to breathing problems to abdominal pain.

Paramedic Rob Mullin and Assistant Ambulance Practitioner Michael Mulryan were among the first crews to use the new ambulances on a morning shift from Edmonton Ambulance Station, helping patients around Tottenham, Walthamstow, and Chingford with the advanced equipment that Rob says allows them to treat patients quickly while being better for their own health and safety. The upgrades come at a critical time as the colder months begin to bite and emergency services prepare for the seasonal surge in calls that winter weather and conditions typically bring to London’s streets. Among the many people the crew cared for in the lightweight vehicle during their first shift were an elderly patient who had fallen, a patient with breathing problems, and a patient suffering from abdominal pain, demonstrating the versatility these modern ambulances provide across different emergency scenarios. The investment in new ambulances represents London’s commitment to providing the best possible emergency care by equipping paramedics with vehicles that are more accessible, more comfortable for patients, and safer for the dedicated crews who respond to emergencies day and night throughout the capital.
