Michigan’s Graduation Rate Reaches Highest Level Since 2008

Michigan’s four-year graduation rate hit 82.8% in 2024, the highest recorded since 2008, according to new state data. This marks a one percentage point increase from last year, with 95,334 students graduating on time. State officials credit ongoing education initiatives for the progress, with 14 of 17 student subgroups seeing improvements.

The largest increase was among multiracial students, whose graduation rate rose 3.5% to 78.78%. Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice acknowledged the gains but emphasized the need to continue closing gaps for struggling schools. The improvement aligns with Michigan’s long-term education goals, showing steady progress since the state adopted a federal tracking formula in 2008. While challenges remain, officials say the data highlights positive momentum for Michigan students.
