Monks Complete 108 Day Peace Walk Through The U.S.

Nineteen Theravada Buddhist monks from Fort Worth Texas completed a remarkable 2,300 mile Walk for Peace arriving in Washington DC after 108 days of walking through eight states to share a message of loving kindness and mindfulness, culminating in a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial where hundreds gathered to mark the end of their journey. Led by Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara and accompanied by rescue dog Aloka the monks averaged 20 to 23 miles per day often walking barefoot through freezing weather and maintaining austere routines including sometimes eating only one meal per day. Thousands lined the streets as they crossed Chain Bridge over the Potomac with police escorts and more than 1,100 onlookers at Washington National Cathedral where interfaith leaders including Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde joined them before they continued to the Lincoln Memorial.

The pilgrimage captured hearts across America with social media following exploding to 2.8 million on Facebook and 1.3 million on TikTok as people from every background found inspiration during divisive times, with Aloka earning his own page with 1 million followers. The journey faced hardship when about three weeks in a pickup truck struck their security vehicle outside Houston resulting in one monk losing his leg though he rejoined the group in Washington in a wheelchair demonstrating the peaceful determination that defined the pilgrimage. At the Lincoln Memorial Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara told attendees that love and kindness does not need power money or a title and urged people to put down their phones and find peace within themselves reminding everyone they were not walking to bring peace but to raise awareness so people could unlock the peace they had locked inside.

The monks received proclamations from governors along their route including North Carolina Governor Josh Stein becoming the first US governor to meet with them while attendees from across the country traveled hours to witness the ceremony proving their message transcended all boundaries.
