More Women Than Men Practicing Medicine in the UK for the First Time

For the first time in history, more women than men are registered doctors in the UK, marking a major milestone in the medical profession. According to the General Medical Council (GMC), 50.04% of licensed doctors are now women, a shift driven by increasing female enrollment in medical schools since 2018.

Scotland and Northern Ireland already have more female doctors, while England and Wales are seeing steady increases. Obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics have the highest number of women, while fields like surgery and emergency medicine still have fewer. The rise in female doctors also extends to general practice, where women now make up nearly 58% of the workforce.

This shift reflects a bright future for healthcare, where a diverse and talented workforce is shaping the next era of medicine. With more women entering the field, patients benefit from fresh perspectives, compassionate care, and a wealth of expertise across all specialties. The growing number of female doctors is a testament to progress and a reason to celebrate the ever-evolving world of medicine.
