Netherlands to Return Over 100 Stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

The Netherlands will return 119 Benin Bronzes to Nigeria, marking a significant step in addressing historical injustices. These artifacts, stolen by British soldiers in 1897 and later sold to the Dutch, include plaques, ornaments, and figures that hold deep cultural significance.

Dutch Minister Eppo Bruins emphasized that repatriating these treasures helps restore Nigeria’s historical heritage, acknowledging the lasting impact of colonial-era looting. In addition to the Dutch government’s decision, Rotterdam will return six more pieces, including a ceremonial staff and a relief plaque.

The Netherlands’ move is part of a wider global discussion on returning stolen cultural artifacts, with ongoing investigations into requests from Sri Lanka, India, and Indonesia. Nigeria’s museum commission welcomed the return, hoping it sets an example for other nations to follow in repatriating looted antiquities.
