New Self-Powered Biosensor Detects and Eliminates Harmful Bacteria in Water

Researchers have developed a revolutionary biosensor that not only detects harmful E. coli bacteria in drinking water but also destroys them on-site, all without requiring an external power source. Traditional detection methods like culturing and PCR testing are time-consuming and require specialized equipment, but this self-powered sensor streamlines the process using an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC), DNA-based antibodies called aptamers, and a bacterial elimination mechanism. By harnessing biochemical reactions, the EBFC generates electricity while simultaneously detecting bacteria and triggering a chemical response to neutralize them.

The biosensor is highly efficient, with the ability to detect E. coli at extremely low concentrations and eliminate 99.9% of bacteria within hours. Its stability over multiple uses makes it a promising tool for real-world applications, including testing contaminated water sources. While the technology shows great potential, researchers are now working on refining its environmental impact, particularly regarding silver ions, which could affect beneficial microbes. If further optimized, this innovation could transform water safety worldwide by providing a fast, reliable, and sustainable solution to bacterial contamination.
